“Taking a breather at a public rest stop during a road trip. A small encounter with someone awaits there.” My name is Megumi. I parked my car at a rest stop along the highway in the late afternoon and sat down on a bench. Sipping tea I’d bought from a vending machine, I just gazed blankly around me. Someone was walking toward me from a distance. A family resting on a nearby bench stands up. I exchange a casual nod with someone whose eyes happen to meet mine. That brief “passing” with a stranger—someone whose name I don’t even know—somehow warms my heart just a little. I’m not looking for anyone in particular. But there’s a part of me that secretly looks forward to that fleeting exchange. I don’t do anything special. I’m just resting there.
